>> we did our best. >>pam: graffiti and broken windows. as the costs goes up, emotions are rising and tolerance is shrinking. >> downtown looks like a war zone. >>pam: tonight at 8:00 p.m., this city of oakland is dealing with the aftermath of violence and vandalism that followed hours of mostly peaceful demonstrations during the general strike for the occupy oakland protesters. j.r stone is live and has

the latest. >>j.r.: i was just upstairs in the meeting that started at 6:00 p.m.. it is likely to go on for a few more hours. at least 100 people have signed up to speak, many of them from the group occupy oakland. at times, things have gotten heated. one man was escorted out by police. >> you bulldozed our homes. we will not forget what you did. someone called a police officer. you are all under citizen's arrest. >> your time is up unless someone else wants to give up their time. officer, escort him away from the microphone please.

because of the vandalisms. jeff bush spoke with members of occupy oakland. jeff >> occupy oakland organizers called a press conference, but when pressed on the issue of the vandalism, one spokesperson tried to stay on her talking point. >> i think it is that journalism to concentrate on a few broken windows when you have tens of thousands of people coming to the streets to protest in a variety of ways. jeff >> it was more than a few broken windows. several businesses were damaged and by morning, class from broken windows crowned in graffiti on walls. another person from occupy oakland said that violence has no place in a movement. >> we do not graffiti or break windows. we are nonviolent. this movement is nonviolent. how is hurting a business helping

was set down yesterday, a small handful of protesters stayed overnight. all left, you can see how they'd what people who showed up for work. but their kids were taken down at about 9:00 a.m. after someone from longshoremen's union got involved furious the economic impact of yesterday's action will not be known until sometime next week. maureen kelly spoke to small business owners who depend on business and they say they already know they were hurt by yesterday's protests. >>maureen: this was one of the drivers stuck in his big rig during the port shutdown. today he is one of the independent truckers tried to make up for lost time. >> it costs a lot of money to operate these trucks. it

is just another loss. third >>maureen: businesses had to shorten hours or close and could not open until late on thursday because of the small handful of protesters that kept streets closed. >> my business is like most businesses right now. we are still trying to hang in there. having to shut down costs money. >>maureen: base support the general idea, >> i support what the protesters are about, but i have a small business and they cannot afford to be shut down. >> we are a part of the 99%.

>>pam: last night's demonstrations took a violent turn. here is video from last night. a small group from the more than 5000 participants from earlier in the day. they clashed with police downtown. in the daylight, you can see the extent of the vandalism. alejandra cerball has more on how much this will cost the city. >>alejandra: the city has not released how much of wednesday's demonstration causecosts taxpayers. >> it means for the community will get less services. >>alejandra: estimates are $1 million from the occupy oakland sweep last week but there still crunching the

numbers. >> last week for the police department, the cost were $700,000. i am in the process of collecting additional costs from other departments that participated in cleanup or in response. >>alejandra: of the mayor says the chief had people on 12 hour shifts in order to reduce the cost. >> it will buy heavily into overtime. that will take away services for the community. >>pam: the police department's internal affairs office was also targeted during last night's vandalism. kron4's spoke with the president of the police officers association about the impact of the city. >> this is a pretty bad. this is terrible. it looks like a war zone. that will cost a lot of money. this business closed down. this

business clothes in solidarity. that is how they get paid back. there is a sign that says kill cops. is that feasible? this makes downtown look like a war zone. this is terrible. who wants to come here and shop? but at the end of all of this, who pays? the citizens of oakland, the services, the windows on a city hall, that will be from the taxpayer money.

>> i am disappointed and distressed over the damage that has been done. i am very disappointed that the city did not take a stronger hand. what i am hearing from the business community, there is great disappointment because they have empowered the protesters by letting them do what they want to do with no restrictions. that has been a major problem for the business community. we have three different tenants that were in the final stages of deals and they pulled out. a 100 employee company, a 35,000 sq. ft. tenant in a 15,000 sq. ft. tenant. thousands of people come to town to enjoy the restaurants, bars and the

art galleries. this one groove is creating havoc. the camp must close. >>pam: as protesters and police clashed, one downtown business mantic it upon themselves to protect his business place. charles clifford spoke with him about what happened. >> it was an unnerving experience. >>charles: he has lived in oakland for his entire life. >> this is how i feed my family. >>charles: he said early thursday, vandals surrounded the building and tried to get it. he sent an unarmed security guard and janitors to the upper floors and grabbed a loaded shotgun in the into position near the entrance. >> some anarchists or trying to make their way inside. i

was in the hallway as they were coming through the door. i asked them to leave. i had the shotgun at my side, i lifted it and they've left out of the building. >>charles: the vandals never try to get back did. thursday afternoon, he did still see graffiti on the side of the building. he respects occupy oakland right to protest, but when the protests turned to violence, the movement loses credibility. >> occupy oakland has demonstrated that they cannot manage to the movement that they have going on and steps need to be taken to make sure what has happened over the last few weeks does not happen again. >>pam: a group of oakland business leaders and clergy weighed in on the occupy oakland protests. they say the movement is taking a toll on the city's dwindling resources.

>> we are the citizens, business people and to ministers of the city. all we are doing is asking them as citizens, as the people who live here, as those who practice their faith in the community, give us a break. that is really all we are seeing. >> most people share the occupy oakland views about the economy and the read about our company's infrastructure, but using oakland as a battlefield for an attack on wall street, occupy oakland is hurting the very people that it is trying to help. >> i am very concerned about the safety of our citizens. sometimes these things rise up and it puts the attention to this city. we are concerned about the safety of our citizens. >> on october 29th, patrol officers were redirected to

was found on his personal laptop. he has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. we have more news from around the bay. in fairfield, the trial for a woman accused of murdering her three children and another child. this is video on the scene of the house fire that killed the four children. the oldest of those children was only 4 years old. police say that she left the house while candles were burning inside. that is what ultimately started the fire. by the time the firefighters got to the scene, it was too late to save the children inside. >>stanley: coming out, i take a look at the vandalism in oakland in the next edition of people behaving badly. >>pam: coming up at 11:00 p.m., women in the military are taking on a new role. we're taking on a special
